Allergic Asthma: Taking an Active Role in Your Treatment PDF Print E-mail

Being proactive and maintaining close communication with your doctor are important keys to controlling your asthma. Instead of just answering your doctor's questions, consider asking some of your own to better understand your condition.

Prepare to make the most of your appointments by asking yourself these questions before each visit and sharing the answers with your doctor.

About your allergic asthma attacks and symptoms:

  • Has my allergic asthma been any better or worse?
  • Have I had symptoms such as coughing, wheezing, shortness of breath or chest tightness?
  • Were there any particular times when my symptoms were a lot worse than usual? Where was I and what was I doing?
  • Have I gone to the emergency room or been admitted to the hospital for my condition?
  • Have there been any changes in my home, work or school environment (such as a new pet, someone smoking, etc)?

About your allergic asthma medicines:

  • Have I missed any regular doses of medicine for any reason?
  • How often have I used my rescue medicine?

About your allergic asthma's effect on your daily activities:

  • Has my condition caused me to miss work or school, or change my activities?
  • Have I been able to do anything or go anywhere that my allergic asthma wouldn't allow before?
  • Is there anything new I'd like to do but haven't yet because of my condition?
